Sabrina Harris and Family
Candidate for Rowan County School Board 2022
Sabrina Harris, who is running for Rowan-Salisbury Schools Board of Education, was at the west branch of Rowan Public Library in Cleveland, NC this afternoon (10-8-2022). She was accompanied by her husband, her two children currently at Mt. Ulla Elementary and West Middle, and her mother. Having her family along at the event fits right in with Sabrina’s goal of getting a “buy in from the whole family” when it comes to local education.
Sabrina said that teachers need support. They need everyone to get involved. She said that it can be as simple as getting grandparents and aunties to come out to see the gingerbread houses the kids made for a class project. She has done that and also served as an assistant dance coach at North Rowan Middle School, on the parent advisory board for Head Start, and as a volunteer to read to classes.
If elected, Sabrina said that her key focus areas would be:
-security
-communication
-transparency
One challenge she said was the new leadership across schools in the county. She said that it becomes especially important for parents to stay involved during times of change. And, the last few years have involved a lot of change noted Sabrina. She said that going to iPads and apps in the schools has been a stretch in some ways.
“Technology is great, but it is a tool,” she said.
It is important that information not be limited to one source noted Sabrina, because some children have access and others do not (or access is limited). This is a bigger issue at the middle school level she said versus elementary. Mt. Ulla is a smaller school, she noted, with more direct contact. When her son lost an important item on the playground, the entire school took turns walking in lines across the school yard, until the item was found. That kind of attention is important and harder to get with bigger school populations.
Sabrina’s background is as a business owner of Vibes, a creative arts incubator. Her areas of expertise are sewing and fashion. She is a graduate of Leadership Rowan and a member of the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce. She has put together summer camp programs for RoCo Parks & Rec including the first art camp in the area featuring multiple disciplines.
