Cleveland, NC town board Dec 2020 - $19,458 for New Maintenance SUV

Town board members from Cleveland, NC met tonight 12-14-2020. The group opened with a public hearing on ordinances concerning alcohol sales in restaurants and food trucks in town.

The big ticket item for tonight was not on the agenda but was introduced during commissioner reports at the end of the meeting.

"We've been talking about getting a vehicle for Troy," said Commissioner Travis Summitt.

Summitt said that he'd priced out a Malibu at $16,535 and a Trax for $19,458. Summitt said he preferred the SUV for $19,458. He noted that the employee said that he did not need a pick up truck and that a SUV would work out. Summitt said the Trax could pull a trailer if needed.

The purchase was approved unanimously, and then funds had to be moved around. Mayor Pat Phifer said that it made sense to put the new SUV under the water fund, since there were already vehicles purchased under the sewer and maintenance funds.

Wall Sign for Board Room $1850

Mayor Pat Phifer suggested that the board consider buying a sign with the new town logo to go on the wall in the town board meeting room. He had three versions for consideration. He said the sign "would look nice in here."

Board members discussed which design they liked the best.

The cost of a sign for the wall would be around $1850.

Christmas Party Blues

Phifer said that the town needed to do something for employees for the holidays. Osborne noted that the board voted to give town employees bonuses at the last board meeting. The cost of the bonuses is $7903. Phifer said that he was referencing the yearly Christmas party.

Due to Covid, restaurants would be out due to the group being too large. Ordering in or catering would also put too many people together in one space, unless employees just dropped by town hall and got carry out at town hall.

The final decision was to wait for a party and have it in the spring or summer. Phifer said that would mean a "nicer dinner."

Up and Early for Garbage and Recycling

Starting in February, garbage pick up will start at 6 or 7 a.m. versus currently 8 a.m. This change was so that the contracted company could get recycling turned in and trash dropped off. The timing is too tight currently.

This change will be in the next town newsletter, and residents may also get calls.
