Cleveland, NC Town Board Meeting 1-10-2022 - Town Clerk Cathy Payne Retires After 28 Years
Tonight marked the official last town board meeting for town clerk/financial officer Cathy Payne who is retiring after 28 years. Payne was officially thanked at the board meeting by three previous mayors, the current mayor, and Nancy Brown. She was also given a plaque in appreciation of her many years of service to the town.
Since a new financial officer has not been hired, the board voted that Pat Phifer would fill that position in the interim so that checks can be signed. Phifer, Osborne, and Gabriel can sign checks. Gabriel was added to the town of Cleveland safety deposit box which is currently listed with Payne and Jim Brown.
The board approved the amount of $453,000 for the upgrade of the Brevard pump station refurbishment with a 10% contingency. This was approved by all board members. Per board member Gerald Osborne, this will complete the upgrades which have been in progress for eight years.
Board members voted unanimously to have the town logo placed on two sides of the water tower in color for a cost of $15,000. Prices ranged from one side with no color at $3600 up to $15,000 with two sides and color.
Mulch at a cost of $1750 was given the green light by board members and also $600 for supplies for a Boy Scout Eagle project shoring up the bank on the small creek in the side of the town park.
Board members voted to officially accept the gift of the park beside the new town library to Cleveland from the county.
Police Chief Jon Jessop reported the following for the previous month Dec 2021:
52 service calls
13 traffic stops
6 citations
1 warrant/arrest
2 accidents (both on Highway 70 - one at Bear Poplar and the other at Amity Hill)
Next month at the schedluled town board meeting 2-14-2022 at 6 p.m. there will be hearings on the following:
1. Connor Hutchinson requested to have his land parcel 265-050 changed from agricultural usage to light industrial.
2. Yolanda Prince wants two land parcels 276-025 and 276-0104 changed from single family residential to general business district.
Hearings are open to the public, and residents can address with board with sign up.
