Ebony Rivers Boyd - Running for Rowan County School Board - Interview West Rowan

Ebony Rivers Boyd - Running for Rowan County School Board

Ebony Rivers Boyd was at west branch Rowan Public Library today (10-8-2022) for a meet and greet with residents from the western part of the county. Ebony is running for seat 4 of the Rowan-Salisbury Schools Board of Education.

“We know how to come together,” said Ebony. Although we don’t do it all the time, “we have the ability. We have the ability to show up as a force.”

With a unique and varied background, Ebony says that she is able to relate and also “think outside the box.” She feels that she would add value to the board and a strong voice for the community.

Ebony grew up in the area and attended Knox and graduated from Salisbury. She then spent six years teaching at the same schools as well as working for DSS and child support education. She is now in higher education.

She said that she knows what teachers need, because she was a teacher in the local schools “not so long ago.” She “understands the needs of teachers, parents, the community.” This would add value to a school board with older members and members who do not have children in the schools currently.

Ebony said that she would work for “what the community needs.” She said that her agenda was not political or personal. She wants solid schools, because she has a young daughter who will be attending our schools. And, she wants what is good for the entire community.

One of the biggest challenges Ebony has seen is simply awareness or lack of it. She says that community members simply do not know about many of the issues. The literacy rates in our area are, for example, low. This is a real problem.

One of her strengths is good community connections. She is authentic and consistent which residents appreciate. She would leverage that public trust to support our schools.

Being a team player is important noted Ebony. She would be one of six (on the school board). She would need to coordinate with her fellow board members and also with commissioners and district representatives.

Ebony’s approach would be to “meet them where they are.” This would be across the board. It would apply to students, teachers, the community. She said that solutions would need to be realistic and holistic.
